Battery Safety

The chemistry of modern hearing aid batteries are not as harmful as those of previous generations, however, If you or your child accidentally ingest a Hearing Aid Battery, it is recommended you consult your doctor immediately.

In 2017, our company achieved an ambitious target to become the world’s first fully ‘mercury-free’ Hearing Aid Battery manufacturer, paving the way to a more eco-friendly future. Since the conversion to mercury-free products, RAYOVAC® has continuously invested in research, development and the manufacturing process, to enable the global switch to the highest quality mercury-free products.

Mercury is a heavy and toxic metal – removing it from hearing aid batteries means less harmful ingredients are used in the production process, and this in turn reduces the amount of environmental exposure to mercury.

Our company is subscribed to a scheme called ‘Battery Back’, which collects batteries at recycling points around the uk and recycles them on the company’s behalf. The company worked very hard with ‘Battery Back’ in the early days to raise awareness of the new legislation with both consumers and customers. Removal of mercury from all products has enabled a significant increase in waste being recycled via ‘Battery Back’.

Battery life is determined by a number of factors including the type and amplification of your hearing aid as well as the hours you wear it. Your hearing care professional can tell you the battery life you can expect based on your hearing aid. There are a number of factors affecting hearing aid battery life and steps you can take to get the longest lasting performance from your hearing aid battery

A zinc air technology, such as that used in our Hearing Aid Batteries, uses air from outside of the battery to activate the chemistry within. The factory applied tab seals the air holes in the battery and ensures freshness until you are ready to use the battery. Do not remove the tab until you are ready to use the battery. To activate the battery, you simply remove the tab. After removing the tab, wait about one minute prior to inserting the battery into your hearing aid. This allows sufficient time for the air to enter and activate the ingredients. Replacing the tab when the battery is not in use will not extend the battery life. Factors Affecting Hearing Aid Battery Life

Modern hearing aid batteries are significantly improved from those available in previous years. Modern hearing aid technologies not only produce clearer, better quality sound but are significantly smaller, most asthetically designed and capable of wireless streaming and IOT connectivity.

Typically, there are four main categories of hearing aid including:

Completely in the Canal
CIC or Invisible in the Canal (IIC) hearing aids are the smallest hearing aids available. They fit completely within the opening of the ear and are barely visable. Although barely noticeable, these hearing aids usually aren’t powerful enough for a user with severe hearing loss and are very fiddly due to their site.

In the canal (ITC)
ITC hearing aids are slightly larger than CIC hearing aids, but stil fit within the opening of the ear. These hearing aids are fiddly due to their size.

Receiver in the ear (RITE)
RITE hearing aids are slightly visable, but less so than BTE hearing aids. This form of hearing aid includes a receiver in the ear, connected by a wire to a speaker placed inside the opening of the ear.

Behind the ear (BTE)
BTE hearing aids are the most common type of hearing aid. These devices consist of a receiver device which sits behind the ear which connects via a plastic tube to a moulded speaker which sits in the ear opening.
Please see the instructions of your brand of Hearing Aid to determine which batteries you should use to power your device.

Hearing Aid Battery systems are interchangeable by size; 10, 13, 312 or 675. However, because of your specific hearing aid and it’s demand based on your usage, you may receive a better quality sound or longer battery life from a certain chemistry. To find out the best hearing aid battery for your personal device and usage, consult your local hearing care expert.

Most Hearing Aids will come with a specific brand of battery, this does not mean they must specifically use these batteries. Your Hearing Aid will require a certain size of Hearing Aid Battery and can only take that specific size. However, brands are interchangeable.

There are four different battery sizes: 10, 13, 312, and 675. Manufacturers use an industry-standard color code to identify the battery size. Different battery sizes are used to power different types of devices. You can find which type of battery your device requires by referring to your hearing device’s manufacturer’s manual.

1. Locate the battery component on your hearing aid and open the door.

2. Place the battery into the hearing aid so the tab is facing outward.

3. Remove the tab and leave the battery door open for 60 seconds to let the battery air up.

4. Securely close the battery door.
